iPhone 17 Air will be so thin that it might not carry a SIM tray: Report

Soon after iPhone 16 was launched, the next-in-line iPhone 17 line-up came into the limelight. The major reason being the Air model. With this series, Apple has plans to introduce the thinnest iPhone ever. Previously, the rumour had it that the iPhone 17 Air would surpass the thinness of the iPhone 6. Now, the latest report indicates that it will be so thin that it might not carry a SIM tray.
According to the Information report, Apple is reportedly planning to eliminate the physical SIM card tray from iPhones 17 Air in additional countries next year. Although the exact countries have not been disclosed, the decision may impact a broader range of iPhone models and markets. It added that since all Air model prototypes lack a SIM tray, it is unclear if the device will be sold in China.
In US, Apple started this trend with the iPhone 14 series, but China declined the concept of e-SIMs in smartphones. Even then Apple reassured that e-SIMs are far safer than the physical one, as they cannot be stolen or removed from an iPhone. In addition, at least eight eSIMs can be managed on an iPhone at once, eliminating the need to obtain, carry, and swap physical SIM cards while travelling.
Leaked specs of the iPhone 17 Air suggest significant upgrades, including a thinner, lighter design with a 6.1-inch display with 120Hz refresh rate.
Powered by the A18 chip, it promises faster processing and improved energy efficiency. Analysts predict that this chipset will enhance multitasking capabilities and graphics performance, making it ideal for gaming and demanding applications. Additionally, advancements in machine learning capabilities may further elevate user experiences, particularly in areas like photography and augmented reality.
The camera system is expected to feature a 48-megapixel primary sensor with enhanced optical zoom and AI-driven improvements for better low-light performance.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be unveiled in September 2025, leaving plenty of time for details to evolve and rumours to shift before its official launch.
